Barry O’Gorman, CEO of Eliminite Termite, embraces the challenge of running a successful, fast-growing company. Strong, Eliminite Termite logodecisive leadership is one of Mr. O’Gorman’s biggest strengths, but the most enjoyable aspect of his position just might be challenging conventional wisdom. The termite extermination business is rooted in an “accepted precedence” line of thinking, with few people bold enough to try a different way, let alone succeed. Mr. O’Gorman recently spoke with Innovative Company about the future of environmentally friendly termite control, his biggest inspirations, inside marketing tips, how we uses failure as a catalyst and many other topics.

  1. Who has been your greatest inspiration?

On the personal side, my wife and children. Without their constant support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It’s nice to go home to a family that loves you, regardless of how your day went at work.

From a professional standpoint, I am a huge fan of Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric. Anyone who increases his company’s value by more than 4,000% over 20 years must be doing something right! I try to pattern my management style after Welch, who knew how to treat people fairly and also made the tough decisions, when necessary. People forget what dire straits GE was in back in the early 80s. When Welch left, it was the same company in many ways, but entirely different in other ways.

  1. What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?

Challenge the status quo! For example, many termite and pest control firms are stuck in the past, with outdated chemicals and extermination methods. At Eliminite Termite, we take pride in leading the charge with products like D-Liminite Orange Oil, which is incredibly effective at eliminating termites, yet also safe for the environment.

  1. Where do you see your business in 10 years?

I see us operating in multiple states, dominating the industry AND changing the “old dog” mentality the industry currently has in its beliefs as it pertains to innovative termite control – our superior alternative options, dedicated staff, people & pet-safe and environmentally friendly termite control should be the future of the industry. We plan to expand beyond the SoCal area and become a regional player – other parts of California, Nevada and Arizona – then continue growth throughout the rest of the United States. We think our dual-option model – with D-Liminite Orange Oil and termite control services – will give customers greater confidence in choosing Eliminite Termite as their exterminator of choice.

  1. How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?

Primarily online marketing – Google ad words, social media sites mainly Yelp… Yelp has provided a very good ROI. Word of mouth marketing has also gained us more than a few customers over the years. Here’s the bottom line: if you believe in your business, work hard and satisfy your customer base, marketing will happen automatically. But it always helps to have a few pros in your corner, especially if you’re new to an online environment.

  1. What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

Trusting other “peer” companies to refer us as we do for them. For example, we refer some alternative companies up in the Los Angeles area in hopes they would do the same for us. To date, unfortunately, this “return referral” hasn’t happened for us. We have referred out tens of thousands of dollars as opposed to branching out into additional specific areas. The big lesson for me with going heavy on referrals is that it doesn’t hurt to invest in your own company, instead of taking a risk that referrals will result in additional business. But we consider a lesson learned, and we’re continuously evolving our business model to take on ever-changing market conditions. Remember, every company will make a mistake – plenty of mistakes! It’s how you respond to adversity that will ultimately determine your future success.

  1. How does your company provide innovation within your industry?

We are a leading alternative termite control company providing Orange Oil termite control. We own our own EPA approved chemical line – D-Liminite Orange Oil, which is people, pet and environmentally friendly. Customers do not have to worry about dangerous gases or chemicals, no longer have to move out of their home/business and is backed by one of the best warranty in the entire industry – full structural. By developing our own product line, we’re more of less putting our destiny in our own hands. We’re in control of where we’re going. Most termite control companies simply use 3rd-party chemicals and established techniques. We’re different. We offer a product and service, and when they’re used in tandem, the result is an alternative – and far superior – method for eliminating termites.
