We recently spoke with Mr. Larson about entrepreneurial advice, future business growth, personal inspiration and much more. His insights offer valuable lessons for young business leaders and entrepreneurs.
1. Who has been your greatest inspiration?
My father, Gary Larson, is my biggest inspiration when it comes to our business. My father taught us to always do the right thing and to put your heart and soul into everything you do. He taught me to always treat people with respect and to never burn a bridge. Without my father’s guidance, I’d never be anywhere close to where – and who – I am today!
2. What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?
One piece of advice would be there are no shortcuts to success. Hard work, passion and dedication are three factors that will drive your success – but remember, you’ll have to put in the time. You’re not going to achieve your dreams overnight. Bottom line: be patient, keep grinding and good things will happen!
3. Where do you see your business in 10 years?
Professionally, I think Lars Remodeling & Design will continue to make inroads into other areas in San Diego County and Southern California in general. Personally, I envision myself traveling the world and enjoying my family – making all that hard work and dedication pay off.
4. How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
Marketing comes in many forms. The best piece of marketing is a happy client. All of the TV commercials, ads, flyers and signs won’t help any business without the praise from past clients. This is something we have seen really impact our business in a positive way. As the old business saying goes, there’s nothing like word-of-mouth advertising. From my experience in the home remodeling industry, I can tell you that’s absolutely true. However, marketing is much different than when we started in ’91. Back then, a newspaper ad or flyer helped reach more potential customers. Today, it’s all about the internet. Ignite Visibility has helped our company connect with those folks that need our services, and that has certainly helped!
5. What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
My biggest failure was to not understand the numbers in my business early on. Numbers don’t lie and without the clear understanding of what the numbers mean, you cannot navigate the ship in the right direction. Learn the accounting in your business. Spend time meeting to discuss the financials week after week. Listen to what it means. I know, it’s not exactly the most exciting part of running a business – but it’s imperative to eventual long-term success. It will make the biggest impact in your business.
6. How does your company provide innovation within your industry?
Lars Remodeling & Design is always trying to improve the remodeling experience for the client. We constantly meet to discuss new ideas on how we can achieve the highest level of satisfaction for the client. Part of this innovation is with our custom home remodeling services. We give our client creative freedom, and we work on coming up with a practical solution that blends unique design with functional living spaces.
